Sodium pantothenate is the sodium salt of pantothenic acid and is used as a dietary form of vitamin b5, although calcium pantothenate is the much more common salt used. It is also used as a hair conditioning agent in some cosmetics. It is commercially synthesized on a large scale from sodium beta-alanine and pantolactone.
