Beta-alanine is a beta amino acid that is naturally produced in animals. It is used as an additive to energy and sports drinks to prevent fatigue in athletes by promoting the production of carnosine in muscles and is also a precursor to the production of vitamin b5. It can be commercially produced synthetically or from bacteria. The synthetic production route involves adding ammonia to various substrates at high temperatures and pressures. Substrates used are acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, beta-aminopriopionitrile, beta-aminopropanol, and succinimide.
