Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is the generic name for both nicotinic acid and nicotinamide. It is commercially produced synthetically from 5-ethyl-2-methylpyridine and 3-methylpyridine, which are in turn synthesized from acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, ammonia and paraldehyde and ammonia respectively. It may also be produced from microbial fermentation.
