Propionic acid is a naturally occuring carboxylic acid. It is used, primarily in the form of calcium propionate, as an antibacterial and antifungal additive to food. It is commercially synthesized via two different processes: the carbonylation of ethylene with carbon monoxide and water, and the oxidation of propanol.
