Glycine is an amino acid used in cosmetic products as a skin-conditioning agent and also as a precursor to several other chemicals like allantoin. Although some amino acids may be produced from hydrolyzed proteins, commercially glycine is produced via the monochloroacetic acid process from chloroacetic acid and ammonia or via the Strecker process from formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia.
