carnosine

Vegan? Maybe Vegetarian? Maybe

Classifications are made based on the available commercial supply of the ingredient, and are made based on the criteria on our classifications page.

Commercially available carnosine may be vegan depending on the source and may be vegetarian depending on the source.

Carnosine is a dipeptide molecule concentrated in animal muscle and brain tissue. Currently, commercial production relies on chemical synthesis but it requires 'many complicated reactions with protected amino acids and highly toxic reagants'. Since I don't have access to the amino acids used it's not possible to know whether this is produced from vegan amino acids.
