Artificial colors is the blanket ingredient name we use for most common synthetic colors (red 40, blue 1, etc.). Most of these colors are produced synthetically in a lab, but the exact synthesis is usually complicated and/or poorly documented. The majority of the components are usually produced from petroleum products, however the exact components used are usually not easily available.
